MP PRESSES FOR NEW POST OFFICE
16th January 2025

Stephen Timms, Member of Parliament for East Ham, met last week with Mr Umesh Patel, the new postmaster for the North Woolwich area, and promised to do everything he could to ensure that a Post Office reopens in the area soon. The previous Post Office in North Woolwich closed in March 2000, and since then the local residents have had to travel to Silvertown when they need to make use of the postal services.

Mr Patel, who owns the newsagent located at 15 Pier Road, has been attempting to purchase the lease for the vacant property next to his shop, and convert the two premises into a new combined Post Office and newsagent. However problems with the planning permission and the licensing conditions of the lease have so far prevented the conversion work from going ahead.

Speaking after the meeting Mr Timms said "The people of North Woolwich have gone without a Post Office for too long. I know that there have been a number of problems which have prevented a new Post Office from opening sooner, and that some of these problems were sadly unavoidable. Since he was appointed postmaster for the area, Mr Patel has been working very hard to get a new Post Office opened in North Woolwich. I am very glad to hear that most of the problems now seem to be getting resolved, and I hope he will be able to start work on the new Post Office soon. I will be certainly be keeping a close eye on the situation, and I will do all I can to help Mr Patel to get the Post Office open as soon as possible."
