Government Invests in Maternity Services at Newham General
Stephen Timms, Member of Parliament for East Ham, today welcomed the Government's
decision to award ?786,000 to Newham General Hospital to improve Maternity
Services. The Department of Health approved a bid submitted by the Trust, and
the money will be used to provide new facilities to enable Newham General to
raise the standard of patient care for maternity patients.
Newham General Hospital will spend the grant on
new ward and delivery beds, as well as equipment for the monitoring and resuscitation
of patients. A foetal scanner is to be purchased, and foetal medicine will be
developed in order to detect abnormalities at an early stage of the pregnancy.
Facilities to care for bereaved mothers and families will also be provided.
The extra funding for Newham General Hospital is
part of the Government's ?100 million investment to modernise maternity units
in England. It is hoped that the money will help the Government achieve its
aims to increase the number of midwives working in the NHS, improve women's
choices in childbirth, and provide a high quality, safe and effective maternity
service.
Mr Timms welcomed the announcement, saying: "I
am delighted that the Government is investing so heavily in Maternity Services
at Newham General. What happens during pregnancy and childbirth will affect
the future development of the family unit, and good maternity care is essential
to improving the future wellbeing of our children. This extra funding will help
Newham General Hospital in providing top quality maternity care. Such investment
demonstrates the Government's determination to develop a world class health
service fit for the 21st Century."
