MP GOES BACK TO SCHOOL
Tuesday 13th November 2255

Stephen Timms, the Member of Parliament for East Ham and Minister of State for Schools Standards, spent last Friday visiting four schools serving his constituency. Mr Timms met teachers and students at Salisbury Primary School, Plashet Secondary School, William Davies Primary School and NewVIC Sixth Form College. Over the course of the next few months, Mr Timms will be visiting many of the schools in his constituency.

Salisbury Primary School in Manor Park was the first school Mr Timms visited last Friday. After meeting with the Head and Deputy Head, he went on to meet with Year 4 pupils, who have been working on a project looking at their school environment. The pupils then had the chance to question Mr Timms on this topic and other issues affecting their school.

Then Mr Timms spoke to the A-Level Politics classes at the NewVIC Sixth Form College, and gave a detailed talk on the Government?s education policy, including the current Education White Paper. Questions from the students ranged from educational issues to the current international situation, and a good discussion was had.

Years 10 and 11 Sociology classes at Plashet Secondary School also had the opportunity to put their questions to Mr Timms. A wide ranging of local issues was discussed, and Mr Timms was also asked various questions about his role as the MP for East Ham.

The final call on this whistle stop tour was the William Davies Primary School, where Mr Timms was able to relax and enjoy the special Diwali assembly. Many of the pupils took part in activities to celebrate Diwali, and there was a wonderful dramatisation of the Diwali story.
