Free School Meals
Primary lunches in Newham are free for everyone, yet a quick claim still brings the school extra funding and opens holiday support for families.

Every child at a state-funded primary school in Newham, from reception to Year 6, gets a free lunch without applying, while secondary pupils get free meals only if the family receives a qualifying benefit. Newham still asks every family to claim, because a claim unlocks extra funding for the school and holiday support.
Who Gets a Meal for Free, Without Applying
All pupils at state-funded schools in England in reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive a free lunch as part of the universal infant free school meals programme funded by the Department for Education. A family's income or benefit status makes no difference.
In London, children in Year 3 to Year 6 at state-funded schools also get a free lunch, funded by the Mayor of London's local extension of the universal scheme. These pupils get a free meal without a benefits check or income test. The Mayor's funding has been renewed a school year at a time, so it is worth checking london.gov.uk or the council's school meals page for the latest position.
Why Hang on to the Claim
Even if your child is in an age group covered by the universal schemes, Newham asks all families with a child at a state-funded school in the borough to claim free school meals, irrespective of employment or immigration status. The reason is the pupil premium: when a claim shows the child as entitled, the school receives extra funding to support disadvantaged pupils, and that funding does not arrive through the universal meal alone.
Only a family member with parental responsibility for the child can apply. One application covers the child for as long as they are at school in Newham, unless they leave the borough and later return. The council rechecks every claim each week, so a family whose circumstances change does not need to apply again.
Older Pupils and Holiday Support
From Year 7 there is no universal offer, and a free lunch depends on the family receiving one of the government's qualifying benefits and having an active claim. Since the start of the 2026 to 2027 school year, every household on Universal Credit qualifies, whatever its income. The other qualifying benefits are:
- income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- the guaranteed element of Pension Credit

A free school meals claim also opens the door to the Holiday Activities and Food programme. It is funded by the Department for Education and run locally by the council, offering free activities and meals during school holidays for children from families receiving benefits-related free school meals.
