This spring, Newham Council is expanding its "one stop shop" network in East Ham with two new advice and support hubs, further extending its cost-of-living response and existing financial wellbeing services.

In February, Newham revealed it had provided cost-of-living support to over 300,000 residents since launching its Cost of Living Response in September 2022. That initiative included £1.3 million in Hardship Support grants and more than 4,500 referrals to its specialist financial support service, Our Newham Money, between September 2022 and the end of January 2023.

Our Newham Money delivered more than £1 million in additional benefit entitlements and immediate financial assistance with food and energy costs to 5,000 families. On average, the council's Income Maximisation team found weekly benefit entitlements of £32,000 for residents that were previously not receiving their eligible amounts, underlining the scale of financial hardship in the borough. Demand for Our Newham Money's services increased 120% year-on-year.

The new hubs will centralise similar support services in East Ham. Alongside providing financial advice, applicants can receive housing, benefits, debt and well-being support.

Family Hub services

Newham already operates a Family Hub at East Ham Library, offering services including pre-birth classes, parenting support and child development checks. The managerless service helps residents navigate the key support systems and services in the borough for children and young people, their families and suppliers who work with them.

The Family Hub launched in Newham in April 2023, providing a holistic approach to supporting families through a one-stop-shop. The Family Hub @ East Ham Library offers a central access point for advice and support for families and their children, including guidance on childcare, mental health, and parent support groups.

The core services of Newham's advice networks: housing, benefits, debt and welfare check-ins, will remain operational. All these services can help residents "save, increase income and reduce expenditure" to live within existing incomes.

The new hubs' official opening dates and exact locations in East Ham have not yet been confirmed. The Family Hub can be contacted on 020 3373 2555.
