27 October 2026

Newham Council is rolling out a mobile advice van to boost local benefits and debt outreach in East Ham, complementing the council's existing support infrastructure.

Why it matters

While Newham offers multiple support channels, residents still face barriers to accessing available benefits and financial help. A recent Well Newham review found that many eligible residents do not claim support due to lack of awareness, complex processes, and unknown access challenges. The new mobile van aims to tackle these issues head-on by taking advice to the heart of the community.

What Newham already offers

Residents can access multiple benefits, debt and form-filling support services through the council:

- MoneyWorks provides advice to help residents manage debts and support organisations helping those in debt.

- The council's form-filling service can help residents fill in forms for benefits and public services.

- Advisors at East Ham Library Family Hub offer face-to-face budgeting, benefits, employment and essentials support for families on Thursdays.

Inside Newham's expanded outreach plan

But now, Newham is taking support a step further with its new mobile advice van, planned to launch in East Ham in autumn 2025. The van will enable advisors to meet residents directly in local communities for confidential, drop-in advice on:

- Checking benefits entitlement

- Managing debt

- Filling out forms

- Getting advice on finances

The van will be part of a wider outreach programme delivering advice at key locations, local events and community meetings to increase awareness and access.

Tackling local need

The mobile offering expands on the council's existing support infrastructure, with several key access points in East Ham, including:

- Our Newham Money and Citizens Advice Bureau support at East Ham Library Family Hub

- Bonny Downs' pensioners benefit advice service launched in 2025

- The council's contact centre, open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm on 020 8430 2000

Watch this space

The council hasn't yet announced the mobile van's route, schedule or targeted demographic groups. So while residents can look forward to local advice delivery soon, the intricacies of this expanded support infrastructure are still awaited.
